The Lead: The Theater of The G20 credit:epa Leaders of the G20 Summit are gathering this week, many doing a dance between speaking of peace, trying not to step on toes, condemning Russia without condemning Russia, and speaking about clean energy. We expected nothing else. World leaders are expected to sign a statement condemning the “war in Ukraine.” It does not condemn “Russia’s war in Ukraine.” Many countries would not sign a document written thus.India, for example, is happy to call for peace but has not sanctioned trade with Russia and does not seem likely to. Chinese President Xi Xinpingsaid thatthe global food and supply chain process is a man-made crisis of politics and that sanctions should be dropped in order to stop politicians from weaponizing food and energy security. China is also not about to join the sanction game. In fact, Asia isnow the recipientof more Russian oil than ever as Europe suffers from a lack of it. This won’t get much better as OPEC has estimatedmore cutsto oil production in the coming months. |

The Trump Announcement credit:afp Former President Trump will make his"special announcement"at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida today. What will it be?? If I were a betting person, I'd say it is a run for the White House in 2024. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? If last week's midterms are any indication, it is not a good thing for Republicans. Trump-backed candidates did not fare very well, and while Republicans did well, it was not the red wave that was predicted. Former Vice President Mike Pencehas saidthat he thinks that there are better choices for the 2024 presidential race. Himself perhaps? The former VP released a memoir today called "So Help Me God." The publisher calls the book "the inside story of the Trump administration by its second highest official." |

The Lasting Damage of Puberty Blockers credit:getty New researchshows that teenagers who go on puberty blockers experience lasting decreases in bone density. Many are attempting to politicize this research so let's avoid doing that. During puberty, bone density is meant to increase by 8-12% per year. There is a reason our bodies do that, to strengthen us for adulthood. Loss of bone density is a concern for menopausal women and that is not political. We should also agree that it is a concern for children. In a group of studies, researchers found that teens who use puberty blockers did not experience this normal bone density increase of 8-12% per year. Meaning their bones were stalled at the same density of childhood. Again, these medications are not approved by the FDA or any other regulatory body for gender dysphoria. They are approved for precocious puberty, or puberty for very young children. When those children use puberty blockers and then go off of them, their bone density seems to recover. When teens use puberty blockers later in life, their bone density does not. When the New York Times asked doctors about these findings, many of them refused to speak on the topic for fear of backlash from trans activists who would rather not admit the danger of using pharmaceuticals. That is a shame. Doctors should feel free to speak about health risks without fear of political backlash. |

STD's On The Rise credit:giphy The U.K. is experiencing anincrease in sexually transmitteddiseases for people aged 65 and up. Experts blame this on the popularity of dating apps and "chemsex." What is chemsex? I'll save you the trouble of Google'ing. It means you use drugs to alter your sexual experience and it is supposedly more popular amongst gay men. But also those dating apps. Whereas older generations might not have found so many opportunities to mix without technology, they are now single and ready to mingle with their phones and that means more opportunities for STDs. But what about that older and wiser thing? Perhaps because people past their fertile age don't need contraception, they mistakenly think that means that they don't need other protective measures. But they do. You can still get syphilis even if you are over 65 so try not to. |
